About

Five years ago I went on a month-long trip to work in Ugandan schools. I left deeply impacted, but never planned to go back. Isn’t it funny how God changes our plans? For the next two years, I will be teaching K through 2nd grade staff children as well as serving in other needed areas at The Amazima School in Jinja, Uganda.

During my time in Uganda in 2012, I was overwhelmed by the need of the students and teachers. I taught 150 students using only one chalkboard in rooms smaller than my current classroom here in the States. The Ugandan teachers that I worked with were overwhelmed and underpaid. The students who were able to attend were asked only to memorize the sentences the teacher wrote on the board, and many students in Uganda drop out or leave school underprepared. I was also shocked to learn that only 6% of children in Uganda finish secondary education. The need for opportunities to attend secondary school is great, especially as almost 50% of Uganda’s population is under the age of 15.

The Amazima School is working to fill that gap by providing discipleship opportunities and Christ-centered secondary education that develops and equips Ugandan students to be leaders in their country. I am excited to use the gifts God has given me and my training to help make this possible for these students!
